Most of our clients don’t need to be sold on the value and versatility of precast concrete. However, we would like to shed light on what we find to be the five most compelling benefits of precast concrete.
Versatility
Precast concrete can be used for a wide variety of things. From man holes to septic tanks, precast concrete is the backbone of infrastructure. It can be made in any color or texture imaginable.
Energy Efficiency
Wells Concrete points out, “The thermal mass inherent to precast concrete lends itself to energy efficiency and reduces the heating and cooling peaks and loads; often necessitating less costly mechanical systems. The national Energy Policy Act of 1992 mandates improved energy performance in commercial buildings, and recognizes the effect thermal mass contributes to reducing heating and cooling loads.”
Easy Installation
Precast concrete structures are easy to install given that the site has been prepared in accordance with installation procedures. Cast in place or pour in place structures are time consuming in that they have to be formed in the field. This can take multiple men and time in order to form certain structures. Precast is ready to install right off the truck, making Precast concrete products easier and more economical.
Economical
Precast concrete is easy to install and is extremely economical. Because of its endurance it requires less maintenance and is less likely to have major structural problems down the road. Precast is able to stand up to the elements. Extreme cold, earthquakes, hurricanes, insects, and other elemental hazards are easily endured with high quality precast structures.
Incredibly Long Lifespan
According to the NPCA “Studies have shown that precast concrete products can provide a service life in excess of 100 years. For severe service conditions, additional design options are available which can extend the life of the precast concrete product. This is extremely important when calculating life cycle costs for a project. Precast concrete also resists most substances. While no material is completely immune to attack from aggressive chemical agents, precast products can often be designed to resist corrosion in specific applications.”
