Driving a concrete mixer truck is no small task. The industry requires skill and focus in all areas. The NRMCA National Mixer Driver Championship competition, now in its 11th year, is one way the industry recognizes drivers.
The competition is serious business, with cash prizes on the line. All areas of skill are tested. In order to select a winner, several competitions were held. These included a written exam, a visual vehicle inspection, driving a course, a reaction-time test, and a delivery ticket station.
This year’s event was held in Nashville, Tennessee, from Sept. 18-19. Eighty-three contestants participated, a record number for this competition. The event has grown rapidly in recent years.
The 2016 grand prize winner, Chris Harrison of Russellville, Arkansas, was second-place finisher in the 2015 competition. He drives for Mobley Concrete. He received a $2,500 cash prize, provided by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau. The second- and third-place winners also earned cash prizes.
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, or NRMCA, is an industry group that was founded in 1930. By working with federal and state agencies, the group promotes new products and techniques for the industry. The organization also addresses regulatory concerns.
The organization has sponsored the competition for more than a decade and is billed as a great way to recognize industry excellence. It also fosters a feeling of togetherness, accomplishment and success among drivers.
The organization is active in education, providing seminars and training courses. Topics include hiring, plant manager certification, environmental concerns.
