Concrete As a Decorative Material

When you think about concrete, what comes to mind? If you’re like most people, you might envision the historic features such as the ancient Pantheon or the impressive Hoover Dam. You might not be thinking about the ways in which concrete can be used in home décor.

Recently, however, concrete is gaining ground as a decorative material. Thanks to interior designers and artisans, it is becoming as popular within the home as it is without.

Why Concrete?

Concrete is a great building material, but it’s also fantastic for creating home décor. According to Boston-based designer Ben Oyeda, “Concrete is such an amazing and cheap material. I can get an 80-pound bag from Home Depot and turn it into tables, vases and planters without using power tools.” This versatility is one of many factors that make using concrete ideal.

In addition, we’ve discussed concrete’s status as a sustainable building material. Concrete structures are not only aesthetically appealing, but also durable, environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Given these myriad benefits, it’s no wonder more and more people are thinking about utilizing concrete indoors.

What Can Be Made with Concrete?

Concrete is so versatile that it can be made into almost anything in terms of interior design. Eric Boyd, a designer from North Carolina, mixes concrete with other materials to create one-of-a-kind countertops. He adds aggregate materials such as semi-precious stones and recycled glass for a mosaic look. He has also used shells and other aggregates mixed into the concrete to create unique and eye-catching pieces.

If you’re thinking about incorporating concrete into your home’s interior landscape, think about using concrete furniture. Concrete can be made into all sorts of things from tables to countertops, wall panels and more. If you’re not keen on dealing with the material itself, you can also consider wallpaper designed to look like concrete slabs. It’s not the genuine article, but it looks great no matter where you use it.
